Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training (HIMT) has once again strengthened its standing as one of India’s premier maritime education institutions after being conferred the Outstanding Maritime Training Institute (Post-Sea) Award at NMDC 2026 by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India. The prestigious recognition was received by Mrs. Tarangini Vakil, Capt. Anand Subramanian, and Dr. Sanjeev Vakil, marking yet another milestone in HIMT’s continuing journey of excellence.
The award carries special significance as it recognises HIMT as the leading maritime training institute in the post-sea category for the fourth consecutive year. It reflects the institute’s consistent commitment to delivering high-quality education and professional development for serving officers and seafarers seeking to upgrade their skills in line with evolving global maritime standards.
Established in 1998 with a vision to provide world-class maritime training, HIMT has grown into one of India’s most respected centres for maritime education. Offering a broad portfolio of pre-sea and post-sea courses approved by relevant authorities, the institute has played a key role in preparing thousands of cadets, officers, and engineers for successful careers in the international shipping industry.
Dr Vakil said, “This award is not merely a recognition of past achievements, but a reflection of a journey that began in 1998 with the belief that quality maritime training can transform seafarers’ lives and strengthen the industry.” He emphasized that while the institute has expanded significantly over the years, its founding mission has remained unchanged—to positively impact the lives of maritime professionals while contributing meaningfully to the wider shipping sector.
HIMT is widely recognised for its strong emphasis on practical learning, discipline, leadership development, and state-of-the-art training infrastructure. Advanced simulators, scenario-based learning environments, and growing integration of virtual reality and digital tools have enabled the institute to provide immersive training that closely mirrors real-life shipboard conditions.
According to Dr Vakil, one of HIMT’s greatest strengths lies in its experienced faculty, many of whom bring extensive sea-going expertise into the classroom. This allows students and officers to benefit from practical insights alongside technical instruction. He also highlighted that innovation at HIMT extends beyond technology to include teaching methodologies, course relevance, responsiveness to regulatory developments, and continuous quality enhancement.
The institute has consistently aligned its programmes with industry needs, ensuring that training is not treated merely as a compliance exercise but as meaningful preparation for the operational realities of modern shipping. This practical approach has earned HIMT the trust of shipping companies, seafarers, and maritime stakeholders both in India and abroad.
Looking ahead, HIMT views the latest honour not as a conclusion, but as motivation to achieve even more. Dr Vakil said, “We see this honour as encouragement to do more—by preparing future-ready professionals and helping position India not only as a supplier of maritime manpower, but as a source of skilled maritime talent and leadership.”
As the shipping industry rapidly evolves through digitalisation, green fuels, automation, and artificial intelligence, institutions like HIMT are expected to play an increasingly strategic role. With its strong foundation, forward-looking vision, and continued focus on excellence, HIMT remains a vital contributor to India’s emergence as a global hub for maritime talent.
