On October 20, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi continued his cherished tradition of celebrating Diwali with the Indian Armed Forces by spending the festival aboard INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier. Stationed off the coasts of Goa and Karwar, the event underscored the nation’s commitment to honouring its military personnel and showcased India’s strides in self-reliance in defence capabilities.
The celebrations commenced with a serene yoga session on the deck of the 45,000-tonne aircraft carrier, symbolizing discipline and mindfulness amidst the vast expanse of the Arabian Sea. This was followed by a cultural program featuring patriotic songs, including a special tribute to Operation Sindoor, reflecting the deep emotional connection of the naval personnel to their missions. The evening culminated in the traditional “Bara Khana,” a communal dinner where PM Modi dined with the sailors and their families, fostering a sense of camaraderie and unity.
During his address, PM Modi lauded INS Vikrant as a testament to India’s technological prowess and self-reliance. He remarked that the mere mention of the ship instilled fear in adversaries, particularly referencing Pakistan’s response during Operation Sindoor. The operation, launched in May 2025 in retaliation for a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, demonstrated the effective coordination among the Indian Armed Forces, compelling Pakistan to swiftly de-escalate. Modi emphasized that the joint efforts of the Navy, Air Force, and Army had brought Pakistan to its knees, underscoring the strength of India’s military unity.
This marks the 12th consecutive year that PM Modi has celebrated Diwali with the armed forces, a tradition he initiated in 2014. Each year, he has visited various border areas to spend time with soldiers, acknowledging their sacrifices and boosting their morale. This year’s celebration aboard INS Vikrant added a unique dimension, highlighting the strategic importance of the Navy in safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests.
PM Modi’s Diwali celebration aboard INS Vikrant was more than a festive occasion; it was a reaffirmation of India’s resolve to maintain a strong and self-reliant defence posture. By engaging directly with naval personnel, the Prime Minister not only honoured their service but also showcased the nation’s advancements in indigenous defence technology. As India continues to strengthen its defence capabilities, such initiatives play a crucial role in fostering national pride and unity.
