The Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI) held its 69th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 19th September at The Club in Andheri West, Mumbai. Presided over by the Master Capt MP Bhasin, Deputy Master Capt Mohan Naik, and General Secretary Capt Pankaj Kumar, the event drew over 100 members.
While the formal agenda was smoothly executed, the post-meeting discussions quickly pivoted to pressing humanitarian and welfare issues presently affecting the Master Mariner community.
A primary focal point was the mounting concern over Capt Ajay Pant, an Indian captain currently incarcerated in a UK prison. Members expressed deep anxiety over his situation, characterizing him as a casualty of geopolitical crossfire. The forum highlighted how global maritime professionals increasingly find themselves victimized by unilateral sanctions imposed by warring nations and their allies. The CMMI leadership reiterated their commitment to advocating for the fair treatment and legal protection of seafarers trapped in international diplomatic disputes.
In addition to global advocacy, the AGM addressed local welfare, specifically the launch of a group medical insurance proposal. Given the surging costs of healthcare in India, CMMI leadership strongly urged members to support the initiative. The plan aims to provide robust health coverage to safeguard mariners and their immediate families against sudden financial medical burdens.
The event concluded with a seamless coordination effort led by the CEO Capt VR Krishnan and Mr Sudhir Palkar, followed by a sumptuous lunch.
The 69th AGM successfully balanced global political awareness with practical, domestic safety nets for its membership.
