Pratik Bijlani – As the maritime industry continues to seek professionals who are not only academically qualified but also operationally prepared, Upskillon Pvt Ltd. is positioning itself to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the realities of life at sea. Founded by Mohammed Asad Basha, an alumnus of AMET University, the Indian maritime EdTech company is developing a dedicated learning platform designed to equip cadets with practical skills that extend beyond the traditional maritime curriculum.

Currently under development, the platform will initially be launched in collaboration with AMET University before expanding further across India’s maritime education ecosystem. It will offer specialised online courses for cadets pursuing B.Sc. Nautical Science and B.Tech Marine Engineering programmes, focusing on technical competency, safety awareness, leadership, communication, multicultural crew management, professional conduct and interview preparation.

Sharing the vision behind the initiative, Mohammed Asad Basha said, “Every cadet graduates with similar academic knowledge, but what truly sets them apart is practical understanding and industry readiness. Through Upskillon, we aim to bridge that gap by providing value-added learning that prepares cadets not just for interviews, but for the realities of life at sea.” Drawing from his own experience as a cadet, he observed that while most students possess similar academic qualifications, practical knowledge and professional skills often become the deciding factors during recruitment.

A distinguishing feature of the platform is its emphasis on scenario-based learning. Developed in collaboration with experienced Master Mariners, Chief Engineers and maritime faculty associated with AMET University, the courses will simulate real-life onboard situations, particularly in critical areas such as enclosed space entry, emergency response and shipboard safety. Rather than focusing solely on procedures, the programmes will help cadets understand their individual responsibilities, decision-making processes and best practices in challenging operational environments.

Highlighting the company’s long-term mission, Basha added, “Our vision is to create industry-ready cadets by combining the experience of Master Mariners and Chief Engineers with modern digital learning, ensuring every young seafarer steps onboard better prepared, more confident and safety conscious.”

Supporting this vision is a team of young maritime professionals comprising Noah Oommen Shibu, Head – Operations and an alumnus of AMET University; Abiya Thankam Saju, Head – Industry Partnership and an alumna of AMET University; and Naira Ashraf, Head – Internship Program and an alumna of AMET University. The initiative is further strengthened by its founding partners, Capt. Ashutosh Tiwari, Visiting Faculty at AMET University, and Capt. Vishnoo Anand K.A., an alumnus of AMET University, whose industry experience contributes to the platform’s practical and professionally relevant curriculum.

Upskillon Pvt. Ltd. is blending digital learning with hands‑on maritime expertise to shape confident, safety‑focused, and employment‑ready seafarers. The initiative aims to strengthen India’s talent pool while contributing to a more skilled and competitive workforce for the global shipping industry.
