The Chandigarh Chapter of the Institute of Marine Engineers India (IMEI), in collaboration with the Institution of Engineers (India), Punjab & Chandigarh State Centre, the Company of Master Mariners (India), and the Merchant Navy Officers Association, commemorated National Maritime Day on April 4, at Engineer’s Bhawan, Chandigarh.

Centered on the theme “Maritime India – Empowering Progress”, the event brought together nearly 50 maritime professionals from the Tri-city region for an evening of knowledge sharing, dialogue, and networking.

Proceedings began with a tribute to Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, followed by a welcome address from Er. Labh Singh, who highlighted current challenges in the shipping industry. Prof. Jasjeet Suri of Chitkara University delivered a keynote on sustainability, emphasizing India’s Harit Sagar – Green Port Guidelines 2023 and the importance of measurable outcomes such as carbon intensity reduction, renewable energy adoption, and circular economy practices.

Capt. L. C. Dharmani, President of MNOA, spoke on the Blue Economy, stressing its role in food security, employment, and climate regulation, while addressing challenges like overfishing and marine pollution. Mrs. Anuradha Singh, maritime psychologist, highlighted the psychological challenges faced by seafarers, advocating for peer support systems, mandatory assessments, and Psychological First Aid.

The Guest of Honour, Capt. Rajat Trehan, shared his rescue operation near Fiji, which earned him the CMMI Exemplary Action Award 2026 and international recognition. Chief Guest Rear Admiral Sandeep Beecha (Retd) underscored the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz and India’s naval role in ensuring maritime security.

The event concluded with a felicitation ceremony, a vote of thanks, and the National Anthem, followed by high tea, providing participants with an opportunity to network and reflect on the day’s discussions.
