We often hear that donating blood saves not just one life, but three. Indeed, a single unit of blood can be separated into red blood cells, plasma, and platelets—each of which may be given to a different patient.
As part of the 63rd National Maritime Week celebrations, the Directorate General of Shipping has chosen not only to highlight the achievements of the Indian maritime sector but also to underscore its responsibility toward public welfare. Blood donation and free health check-up camps have been designated as key activities, reminding us that the strength of the industry lies not only in ships and trade routes, but in the people who keep them moving.
For seafarers and port workers, who often face accidents or sudden medical emergencies, the availability of safe blood can mean the difference between life and death. By donating, maritime professionals and their families are helping to build resilience in coastal communities and ensuring hospitals remain prepared for both routine care and unforeseen crises.
Blood donation also benefits donors. Each donation is accompanied by a basic health screening, which can sometimes reveal underlying issues early. Regular donors often experience improved cardiovascular health, as giving blood helps balance iron levels in the body. Beyond the physical, there is a profound emotional reward—knowing that one’s contribution may have saved a stranger’s life fosters a sense of purpose and belonging.
Of course, blood donation is not suitable for everyone. Those with anemia, uncontrolled hypertension, heart disease, or recent major surgeries are advised to refrain. Individuals recovering from infections, or those living with hepatitis, HIV, or undergoing cancer treatment, must also avoid donating to protect both themselves and recipients. Pregnant women and those who have recently given birth are similarly advised to wait until their bodies have fully recovered.
The message of this year’s Maritime Week is clear: the industry’s resilience is built on solidarity. By participating in the blood donation and health camp, shipping professionals reaffirm their role not only as custodians of trade but also as champions of humanity. In giving blood, they give life—and in doing so, they strengthen the very communities that sustain the maritime world.

Donating blood is a precious gift—one that money cannot buy and science cannot create.
