OM Maritime has made a significant move by securing its first-ever newbuildings from Jiangxi New Jiangzhou Shipbuilding Heavy Industry in China. This Singapore-based niche tanker company has placed firm orders for two stainless steel chemical tankers, each with a deadweight tonnage of 13,800 dwt. These state-of-the-art vessels will feature twelve duplex stainless steel cargo tanks, a technology that emerged from Japan about ten years ago.

Duplex stainless steel cargo tanks provide enhanced strength and improved corrosion resistance compared to traditional austenitic stainless steel. Additionally, they are more cost-effective to manufacture due to their lower nickel content, making them an attractive choice for tanker construction.

According to OM Maritime’s CEO, Captain Subhangshu Dutt, the first of these newbuilds is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2026, with the second ship expected to follow shortly thereafter. Dutt emphasized that these vessels have been custom-designed to meet OM Maritime’s specific operational needs. They will have the versatility to transport a range of cargoes, including chemicals, acids, petroleum products, and edible oils.

The strategic choice to build these tankers highlights OM Maritime’s commitment to enhancing its fleet capabilities while adapting to the evolving demands of the shipping industry. The introduction of these advanced vessels not only represents a milestone for the company but also signifies a noteworthy development in the niche tanker market. As OM Maritime prepares for delivery, the industry will be watching closely to see how these innovations impact the company’s operations and growth trajectory in the competitive maritime landscape.
