Pratik Bijlani – Capt Prafull Hudekar, a seasoned mariner and accomplished watercolour artist, continues to bridge the worlds of seafaring and fine art through his evocative maritime creations. Born in 1964, he began his artistic journey in 2007, drawing deeply from his years at sea. Today, his work stands as a testament to how lived maritime experiences can be transformed into compelling visual narratives that capture the essence of oceans, harbours, and coastal heritage.

His recent Watercolour Exhibition held at Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai from 20th to 26th April offered audiences an immersive glimpse into the life of a seafarer. Through his signature seascapes and plein air techniques, Capt Hudekar portrayed not only the vastness and beauty of the oceans but also the subtle moods, textures, and cultural identities of ports across the world. His works resonate with authenticity, shaped by firsthand encounters with the sea rather than distant observation.

Currently serving as the India (West Zone) Country Leader for Fabriano in Aquarello and a brand ambassador for Daniel Smith watercolours, Capt. Hudekar has gained international recognition for his artistry. His paintings have been exhibited across prestigious global platforms, including Italy, Australia, Malaysia, and India, while also earning accolades such as the BOA Gallery Award (2024) and recognition from the Director General of Shipping. His association with leading art institutions and participation in international conventions further highlight his influence in the global watercolour community.

At the heart of his work lies a simple yet profound objective—to communicate the life of a seafarer to those ashore. “Through my watercolours, I share the life of a seafarer—capturing harbours, heritage, and the emotions of the sea. Art preserves what words cannot. Every port has a story, and through painting, we keep it alive. I encourage maritime professionals to embrace creativity—it’s never too late to begin,” says Capt. Hudekar. His philosophy underscores the role of art as a medium that transcends documentation, preserving not just visuals but the emotional and cultural depth of maritime life.

Beyond his personal achievements, Capt. Hudekar has also inspired fellow seafarers to explore their creative potential. One such example is Mr. Sheldon D’Souza, Chief Engineer, who credits his artistic journey to Capt. Hudekar’s mentorship. What began as casual encouragement onboard a vessel gradually evolved into a meaningful pursuit of watercolour painting. Through persistence and practice, Mr. D’Souza developed his skills, discovering art as a powerful outlet amid the demanding nature of life at sea.

Reflecting on his experience, Mr. D’Souza shares, “Painting became my escape at sea—transforming stress into creativity. Inspired by my mentor, I discovered that art not only relaxes the mind but also helps express life at sea in a meaningful way. I encourage young seafarers to explore creative passions beyond screens and find their own balance.” His words highlight an increasingly relevant aspect of maritime life—the need for mental well-being and creative balance in a high-pressure profession.

Together, the journeys of Capt. Hudekar and his mentees illustrate how art can enrich the maritime profession, offering both personal fulfilment and a deeper connection to the seafaring experience. In an industry defined by precision and discipline, their stories serve as a reminder that creativity and expression have an equally vital place—transforming the silent vastness of the sea into enduring works of art.
