Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first container shipping company in the world to operate a fleet of 1,000 vessels. The landmark was reached following the delivery of the 11,480 TEU MSC Migsan from Zhoushan Changhong shipyard in China, according to data from maritime consultancy Linerlytica.

This achievement further cements MSC’s position as the world’s largest container carrier, with a total fleet capacity of approximately 7.3 million TEU—around 57% larger than its closest competitor, Maersk. Notably, MSC’s capacity is now nearly equal to the combined fleets of major carriers such as Hapag-Lloyd, Ocean Network Express, Evergreen Marine, and HMM.

Founded in 1970 by Gianluigi Aponte in Naples, MSC has witnessed remarkable expansion, particularly since 2020, when the container shipping market experienced an unprecedented boom. Industry analysts highlight that this growth has largely been organic, driven by strategic fleet expansion rather than major acquisitions.

In a parallel development, MSC recently announced a leadership transition, with Mr. Aponte, now 85, handing over ownership of the business to his children, Diego Aponte and Alexa Aponte, while continuing as Executive Chairman. The move reflects the continuation of a long-standing maritime legacy within the Aponte family.

Today, MSC operates across 300 trade routes, calling at over 520 ports worldwide and transporting around 30 million TEU annually. The broader MSC Group, which also includes logistics and cruise operations, employs approximately 200,000 people across 155 countries.

As global container shipping faces renewed uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions, MSC’s milestone underscores its scale, resilience, and dominant position in an evolving maritime landscape.
