The seminar on Recent Initiatives for the Maritime Sector held on April 1 at the Maritime Training Institute (MTI), Mumbai, emerged as a key highlight of the 63rd National Maritime Day celebrations under the aegis of the Directorate General of Shipping. Bringing together policymakers, maritime professionals, and industry stakeholders, the session underscored India’s evolving regulatory landscape and its commitment to building a competitive, future-ready maritime ecosystem.
The event commenced with a welcome address by Capt Som Raj, Director (P&A), Shipping Corporation of India and Chairman of the NMDC Organizing Committee, who reflected on the significance of National Maritime Day and the historic voyage of SS Loyalty. He highlighted the week-long celebrations themed “Maritime India: Empowering Progress” while emphasizing unity within the maritime fraternity amid global challenges.
Mr Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping, delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining India’s maritime growth trajectory under Maritime India Vision and Amrit Kaal goals. He emphasized reforms in ship registry, legislative advancements, and India’s leadership at the IMO, alongside the increasing global recognition of the sector. Mr Jagannathan said this during his presentation “India’s maritime sector is advancing with strong momentum, driven by growth in shipbuilding, training, and global leadership. Even amid geopolitical uncertainties, our commitment to seafarer welfare remains unwavering. Through progressive reforms and a 24×7 grievance redressal mechanism, we stand dedicated to supporting maritime professionals and strengthening the nation’s maritime future.”
Capt. Anish Joseph, in his keynote address, highlighted the indispensable role of seafarers in sustaining global trade, particularly during geopolitical disruptions. He outlined key developments including the Merchant Shipping Act 2025, enhanced casualty response frameworks, and institutional support systems. Capt. Joseph said this during his keynote address “Seafarers remain the backbone of global trade, navigating uncertainty with resilience and courage. As challenges intensify, our commitment is to ensure their safety, welfare, and growth through stronger regulations, responsive support systems, and expanded opportunities. Together, we must build a maritime ecosystem that is inclusive, secure, and future-ready for generations ahead.”
Subsequent presentations addressed critical aspects of the maritime ecosystem, including crewing and employment opportunities, maritime safety, coastal shipping, and inland waterways. Speakers highlighted India’s growing seafarer base, ongoing digitalization efforts such as e-governance and online certification systems, and measures to enhance transparency and regulatory efficiency. Significant emphasis was also placed on safety, with discussions around casualty response frameworks, health-related risks, and the need for proactive safety culture reinforced through training and awareness.
Seafarer welfare emerged as a central theme, with a focus on mental health, support systems, and inclusive policies, particularly for women in maritime. The importance of skill development, improved training standards, and career progression pathways was repeatedly emphasized, reinforcing India’s position as a leading provider of maritime manpower.
The seminar transitioned into an engaging panel discussion moderated by Capt. Anshul Rajvanshi, bringing together industry leaders to deliberate on workforce challenges, employment gaps, digital transformation, and policy implementation. Panellists highlighted the need to bridge the gap between training and employment, address shortages in marine engineering talent, and strengthen safety practices through disciplined execution and adherence to regulations. Discussions also explored opportunities in coastal shipping and inland waterways, alongside the need for enhanced financial incentives to support fleet expansion and private sector participation.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Sudhir Kohakade, followed by high tea and networking, marking a successful exchange of ideas and reaffirming the collaborative commitment of stakeholders towards innovation, sustainability, and growth in India’s maritime sector.
