The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) and the Institution of Marine Engineers (India) (IMEI), Chandigarh Chapter, jointly hosted a one‑day seminar on “Sustainability and Innovations in Marine Technology” at IEI Bhawan, Chandigarh. The event drew 74 maritime professionals, including senior industry leaders, practicing engineers, academics, and policymakers, creating a vibrant forum for knowledge exchange and strategic dialogue.
The seminar, coordinated by Er. Ajit Singh (IMEI), opened with a welcome address by Er. Sukhbir Singh Mundi, Past Chairman of IEI, who emphasized the importance of professional forums in tackling contemporary maritime challenges. Er. Iqbal Singh, Chairman of IMEI Chandigarh Chapter, introduced the seminar theme, underscoring the need for collaboration across industry, academia, and regulatory bodies.
Delivering the keynote, Er. Manoj Kumar Sinha of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) outlined IOCL’s initiatives to meet evolving maritime requirements, from emerging fuel technologies to environmental standards. He highlighted the proactive role of energy providers in enabling sustainable and compliant operations amid global transitions in fuel quality and emissions norms.
The Guest of Honour, Captain (Dr.) Nitin Agarwala of the Indian Navy, presented a paper on the “Role of Policy Framework for Disruptive Technologies in the Maritime Domain.” He argued that regulations must bridge governance, insurance, business models, and technology, warning that outdated frameworks hinder innovation. He called for forward‑looking policies to balance public interest with innovation, address workforce displacement, and ensure equitable sharing of disruption’s costs and benefits.
The technical sessions featured diverse perspectives, Er. Manpreet Kaur (BBSBEC) addressed marine corrosion, advocating advanced coatings, cathodic protection, and emerging solutions like additive manufacturing and self‑healing polymers.
Prof. Jasjeet Suri (Chitkara University) applied the Triple Bottom Line framework, urging integration of sustainability indicators such as the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) into maritime operations.
Er. Arjun G. Singh Tuteja (IOCL) discussed innovations in marine lubricants, AI‑enabled sensors, and compliance with regulatory ratings including EEXI, CII, EU ETS, and FuelEU.
Capt. Prabhat Nigam (Chitkara University) highlighted reforms in maritime education under Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal 2047, positioning India as a global skill hub.
Er. Munish Sharma (Royal Marine Ship Management Services) explored advancements in electronic engines, hybrid power generation, ballast‑free ship designs, and AI‑driven operational optimization.
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Er. Manpreet Kaur, Honorary Joint Secretary of IEI, followed by the National Anthem and a networking lunch. The event underscored the maritime sector’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and future‑ready education, marking a significant step in shaping India’s maritime trajectory.
