On the 4th April, Mumbai’s bustling CST station played host to a remarkable maritime exhibition called Sagar Ki Pukar, which was organised as part of the National Maritime Day Week 2024 celebrations, the event offered a unique opportunity for the local populace to gain insights into the Merchant Navy and its significance.

As a prelude to the annual National Maritime Day on April 5th, Sagar Ki Pukar aimed to demystify the maritime industry and inspire individuals to consider a career at sea. The exhibition featured informative displays showcasing the process of joining the maritime industry, attracting the interest of aspiring seafarers and curious commuters alike.

Highlighting the maritime heritage of India, the exhibition also showcased miniature models of notable vessels, including the Desh Ujaala, a Crude Oil Tanker built in 2005 and currently sailing under the Indian flag, and the LNG carrier Lakshmi. These models provided a tangible glimpse into the diverse fleet of ships and tankers that ply the world’s oceans under the Indian flag.

The event’s inauguration saw Mr Shashi Bhushan, ADRM, Central Railway perform the ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the official commencement of the exhibition. Among the esteemed guests in attendance were industry stalwarts such as Mr Shyam Jagannathan, Director General of Shipping & Chairman of the NMDC (Central) Committee, Capt. B.K Tyagi, Chairman & Managing Director, SCI & Vice Chairman of the NMDC (C) Committee, and Dr Pandurang Raut, Deputy Director General of Shipping & Member Secretary of the NMDC (C) Committee.

Throughout the day, commuters had the opportunity to interact with sailors and cadets, gaining firsthand insights into life at sea and the challenges and opportunities associated with a career in the Merchant Navy. These interactions fostered a deeper understanding of the maritime industry, igniting curiosity and interest among attendees.

Sagar Ki Pukar served as a bridge between the maritime community and the general public, fostering awareness and appreciation for the vital role played by seafarers in global trade and commerce. As the maritime industry continues to evolve, initiatives like these play a crucial role in inspiring the next generation of maritime professionals and ensuring the industry’s continued growth and prosperity.
