On June 25, the National Maritime Day Celebrations (Central) Committee (NMDC) and the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) marked the 15th edition of the Day of the Seafarer with an inspiring event at the Bharat Ratnam Mega Common Facilitation Centre in Mumbai. Established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2010, this day celebrates the vital role of seafarers in global trade, the economy, and society, while advocating for their welfare and rights.
The event, themed “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity,” underscored the maritime sector’s responsibility to protect marine ecosystems, leverage innovation, and embrace sustainability. Campaigning for a “Harassment-Free Ship,” it reflected the industry’s commitment to inclusivity, mental health, and equity. Chief Guest Vice Admiral Deepak Kumar Goswami and DG Shipping Director General Mr Shyam Jagannathan were joined by industry stalwarts including Capt BK Tyagi, CMD of SCI ; Mr Sushil Khopde, IPS, Addl. Director General of Shipping; Capt SI Abul Kumar Azad, Nautical Advisor‑cum‑Additional DG (Nautical); Capt MP Bhasin, Master Chairman of CMMI; Capt Vivek Bhandarkar, Secretary General of CMMI; Capt. Philip Matthews, Director at SIMTF; Mr Rajeev Nayyer, President of IMEI and other distinguished figures.
Opening the ceremony, Capt Tyagi welcomed attendees with a compelling tribute to seafarers, emphasizing their indispensable contribution to global commerce. “No seafarer, no shipping, no shopping,” he remarked, quoting the IMO Secretary-General, and added, “No life without seafarers.” He lauded the zero-tolerance campaign against harassment, emphasizing clarity in task assignment to prevent mismanagement. Reflecting on the seafarers’ resilience in conflict zones, he praised the protocols under DG Shipping’s guidance and commemorated 75 years of DG Shipping’s service.
A highlight was the video message from Hon’ble Union Minister Mr Sarbananda Sonowal, who extended his wishes while championing the campaign’s objectives of inclusivity and safety. Applauding India’s maritime strides under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, he commended Indian seafarers for their professionalism and global recognition. He concluded with an appeal for collective efforts to ensure gender equity and a supportive maritime environment.
IMO Secretary-General Mr. Arsenio Dominguez’s video message further emphasized fostering a harassment-free workplace aboard ships. Highlighting the IMO’s mandate for anti-harassment training under the STCW Code, he called for a culture of respect and safety for all seafarers.
An engaging presentation by Mr Deependra Singh Bisen detailed DG Shipping’s transformative initiatives for maritime training, skilling, and placement. Showcasing advancements like digital Tar Books and AI-enabled systems, he emphasized transparency and efficiency in the sector. Similarly, Capt. Harinder Singh highlighted DG Shipping’s Suraksha Sarvodaya initiative, focusing on accident prevention and seafarer health. He urged stakeholders to prioritize physical and mental well-being to counter trends of high mortality and stress-related issues among seafarers.
The event included the felicitation of exceptional seafarers and the launch of the Maritime Union of India’s (MUI) E-Library project, offering secure access to educational resources. The intuitive digital platform is a leap forward in maritime education, combining traditional learning with modern technology.
A thought-provoking panel discussion, moderated by IMEI Chairman Mr. David Birwadkar, explored the event’s themes. Panellists shared insights on fostering environmental stewardship, adapting to climate challenges, and leveraging technological advancements to create sustainable maritime practices. They also discussed building harassment-free ships, emphasizing equality, respect, and zero tolerance for misconduct.
Vice Admiral Goswami delivered an inspiring address, celebrating India’s maritime heritage and the collaboration between the Indian Navy and Merchant Navy. “Seafarers are the backbone of industrial trade and commerce. You truly represent the spirit of this special day—a spirit that celebrates courage, camaraderie, and dedication,” he stated. Commending initiatives like Operation Sankalp, he reaffirmed India’s commitment to maritime security and resilience.
Concluding the event, Mr Jagannathan acknowledged the seafarers’ pivotal role in global trade and the government’s efforts in ensuring their welfare. “It is indeed a privilege to be incumbent as the Director General of Shipping. And all I seek to assure you today on this International Day of Seafarers is that we will work together with you to ensure no harassment and make our oceans an ocean of opportunity,” he affirmed.
With cultural performances, thoughtful discussions, and heartfelt tributes, the celebration epitomized the resilience and dedication of the maritime community. It reflected a shared vision for a sustainable, inclusive future, honouring the seafarers who keep global trade afloat.
