On April 26, the CMMI Navi Mumbai Chapter hosted a landmark seminar at The Great Eastern Institute of Maritime Studies (GEIMS), Lonavala, focusing on the theme “Career Progression of Cadets.” This event brought together cadets from seven maritime academies, experienced professionals, and industry leaders to exchange insights, foster mentorship, and prepare the next generation of maritime professionals for their journey ahead.

The day commenced with a warm welcome address by Capt. Subroto Khan, Principal of GEIMS, who emphasized the pivotal role cadets play in shaping India’s maritime future. Capt. Khan highlighted the government’s vision of increasing the global share of Indian seafarers from 12% to 20%, remarking, “You young seafarers, would-be seafarers, the future leaders of the maritime industry, will be the backbone of this glorious time of the maritime industry in India.” He commended the collaborative spirit of the seminar and encouraged cadets to seize the opportunity to learn from industry stalwarts.

Following this, Capt. Nand K Sah, Chairperson of CMMI (Navi Mumbai), delivered the opening speech. He underscored the seminar’s significance in equipping cadets for the challenges of a maritime career, advocating for mental safety, resilience, and preparedness. “This seminar is about ensuring cadets feel safe, secure, and ready to navigate the challenges of the maritime industry,” he said. Capt. Sah also praised the industry’s collective responsibility toward cadets and stressed the need for an environment that prioritizes their growth and well-being.

The keynote address by Capt. M.P. Bhasin, Master Chairman of CMMI, marked a defining moment of the seminar. He celebrated the initiative as a pioneering effort to unite cadets from diverse institutions to discuss innovation and career progression. “It was the first time cadets from different institutes were brought together under one roof to discuss career progression, innovation, and technological advancements,” he stated. Capt. Bhasin urged cadets to embrace adaptability, leverage technology, and take pride in their profession, highlighting their unique skills as seafarers.

Interactive sessions and presentations added immense value to the seminar. Ms. Deepti Mankad, Founder of Mindspeak, delivered a thought-provoking session offering cadets a realistic perspective on the Merchant Navy profession. Using an interactive survey, she explored cadets’ motivations, with 29% citing financial gains, and revealed concerns like dealing with seniors (36%) and adapting to new environments (22%). She debunked myths about the profession, highlighting its demanding nature and the need for adaptability. Emphasizing resilience, discipline, and respect for roles, Ms. Mankad encouraged cadets to embrace proactive learning, manage expectations, and balance passion with the challenges of life at sea.

A panel discussion moderated by Capt. Khan explored “Expectations from Cadets at Sea,” bringing together cadets, sailing staff, and company representatives. Valuable perspectives were shared on fostering open communication, mentorship, and inclusivity, particularly for female cadets.

Capt. Viraf Chichgar, Dean of FMTI, captivated attendees with a presentation on emerging technologies, including AI, digital twins, and sustainable propulsion systems. He emphasized the transformative potential of innovation in enhancing maritime safety, efficiency, and environmental compliance.

The seminar concluded with a cultural performance by GEIMS cadets and a vote of thanks by Capt. B.P. Singh, Secretary of CMMI (Navi Mumbai). As the day wrapped up with lunch, the seminar stood out as a beacon of collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and inspiration, equipping cadets to navigate their careers with confidence and excellence.
