Pratik Bijlani – Gateway Terminals India (GTI), also known as APM Terminals Mumbai, has partnered with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Vadhvan Port Project Ltd. (VPPL) to launch a transformative skill development programme for the port sector. This initiative, aligned with the Government of India’s “Skill India Programme” and the Union Budget 2025’s employment generation goals, aims to empower local communities, enhance employability, and promote diversity in port operations.

The programme, hosted at GTI, will provide industry-aligned vocational training in critical areas such as safety, maintenance, planning, and equipment operations. Designed to create a job-ready workforce, the curriculum blends theoretical knowledge with hands-on training. Key objectives include supporting individuals impacted by port development projects, enhancing female participation in port operations, and fostering a more diverse and inclusive workforce. Participants will also benefit from stipends or compensation during apprenticeships.

Shri Unmesh Wagh, Chairman of JNPA, emphasized the initiative’s impact, stating, “This initiative not only provides valuable opportunities for our local community but also demonstrates a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion within the port sector. We are proud to partner with GTI in this endeavour, which will undoubtedly contribute to the socio-economic upliftment of the local community and foster a more representative workforce.”

Jon Goldner, Managing Director for Asia and the Middle East at APM Terminals, highlighted the strategic importance of this collaboration, saying, “Upskilling and training are a core part of our global value proposition, and initiatives like this skill development programme in India underline that commitment.”

By combining GTI’s operational expertise, JNPA’s administrative support, and VPPL’s developmental vision, this initiative is set to revolutionize workforce development in India, reinforcing the government’s mantra of “ports for prosperity and ports for progress.”
