The maritime industry is at a critical juncture, as it navigates the challenges of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting sustainable practices, and ensuring the well-being of seafarers. International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez highlighted India’s leadership in embracing the green transition and its commitment to sustainable shipping practices at the DGS-IMEI Green Shipping Conclave in India, which was held on 20th February at Westin, Mumbai.
India’s progress in promoting sustainability in the maritime sector is evident in its policies and initiatives. The country’s growing economy, vast coastline, and young population make it an ideal nation to drive this change. Mr Dominguez praised India’s efforts, stating, “I’m impressed by India’s progress in embracing the green transition, particularly in the maritime sector. The country’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its policies and initiatives.”
Mr Dominquez emphasized that the maritime transition is not just about the environment; it’s also about the people, safety, and sustainability. He highlighted the importance of investing in better quality services and entitlements on board ships, as well as promoting diversity and inclusion in the maritime sector.
He also discussed the challenges facing the maritime industry, including technological, financial, and human resource hurdles. However, he expressed confidence in the industry’s ability to overcome these obstacles, stating, “We’re committed to addressing these issues and supporting countries in their transition to sustainable shipping practices.”
The IMO is working on various initiatives to promote sustainable shipping, including the development of guidelines for alternative fuels like green hydrogen and ammonia. The organization is also focusing on ship recycling, seafarer welfare, and the importance of protecting the oceans and waterways.
Mr Dominguez emphasized the need for continued collaboration and awareness-raising about the importance of sustainable shipping practices. He encouraged the audience to share their thoughts, challenges, and opportunities, stating, “Let’s continue to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable shipping practices and the progress we’re making.”
As the maritime industry continues to evolve, India’s leadership in embracing the green transition serves as a model for other nations to follow. With its commitment to sustainability, India is poised to play a critical role in shaping the future of the maritime industry.
