Pratik Bijlani – The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), widely recognized as India’s best-performing port, continues to excel in its operational performance and trade facilitation. In January 2025, JNPA handled an impressive 635,665 TEUs of containers, reflecting a significant 23.21% increase compared to the same month in 2024. Total cargo throughput for the month also saw a remarkable rise, reaching 7.92 million tonnes, a 17.77% improvement over the previous year.
A milestone was achieved in rail operations as JNPA recorded its highest-ever monthly rail traffic, with 641 container rakes transporting 101,984 TEUs. This feat surpassed the previous record of 100,166 TEUs set in March 2010, showcasing JNPA’s growing efficiency in intermodal logistics.
In the fiscal year from April 2024 to January 2025, the port handled 6,013,086 TEUs, marking a 14.08% growth compared to the previous year, along with 76.29 million tonnes of total cargo, up by 7.99%. Rail traffic during this period also advanced significantly, with 5,630 rakes carrying 891,988 TEUs, a notable increase from the 851,153 TEUs handled by 5,338 rakes during the same period last year.
With a rich history spanning over three decades since its establishment on May 26, 1989, JNPA has evolved into a world-class container port, boasting an impressive array of advanced terminals and specialized facilities. The port’s strategic investments in infrastructure development, including its SEZ and the upcoming greenfield port project at Vadhvan, Maharashtra, are poised to further enhance its capabilities and solidify its position as a leading player in India’s maritime trade.
