The National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) commemorated Seafarers Unity Day on November 6, at the Indian Sailors Home Society (ISHS), convening distinguished maritime experts and union leaders under the unifying theme Seafarers: Moving the World.
The internationally broadcast event spotlighted seafarers’ pivotal role in global trade and their selfless dedication. NUSI reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Indian seafarers’ interests, providing essential resources in healthcare, education, and professional growth.
The Seafarers Unity Day celebration, observed as a paid holiday for seafarers on Indian and foreign-flagged vessels under NUSI agreements, featured inspiring speeches from prominent dignitaries. Advocate Premanand Salgaonkar, President of NUSI, delivered a stirring address, highlighting the growing significance of India’s seafarers in the face of expanding international trade agreements. “With India entering into free trade pacts with multiple nations, seafarers bear immense responsibility… and I firmly believe the shipping industry holds tremendous potential,” he emphasized, striking a chord with the audience. His words echoed NUSI’s unwavering commitment to empowering seafarers and bolstering their presence in the dynamic maritime sector.
The presence of esteemed guests Shri Shiva Gopal Mishra – Chief Guest and Shri Mahendra Gharat – Guest of Honour elevated the event. Shri Mishra, AIRF General Secretary, pledged to introduce a railway ticket quota for seafarers, simplifying their commute. He commended the seafaring community’s unity, highlighting its power in overcoming challenges and advocating for their rights.
NUSI General Secretary Milind Kandalgaonkar shared his pride in the union’s remarkable progress, citing the significant milestones achieved under NUSI agreements. “Over the past two years, we’ve successfully brought over 400 ships under our agreement, drastically improving the lives of hundreds of sailors who now enjoy enhanced working conditions and a better quality of life,” he stated, underscoring NUSI’s unwavering dedication to advancing seafarers’ welfare.
The day’s key highlights included the launch of “NUSI SAMVAD PRASAARAN,” a dedicated WhatsApp channel for NUSI members, inaugurated by Shri Mishra. This innovative tool aims to keep seafarers informed about the latest industry news and updates, creating a more connected and informed maritime community. Additionally, NUSI introduced the prestigious “NUSI Excellence Award” to recognize exceptional leaders in maritime education and training. The inaugural awardees were Capt. Mahesh Yadav, Capt. K. N. Deboo, and Shri David Birwadkar, honored for their remarkable contributions to the development of maritime professionals.
Prominent shipping leaders, including Shri Anil Devli of the Indian National Shipowners’ Association (INSA) ¹, Capt. S. M. Halbe of MASSA, Capt. R. Y. Barve of FOSMA, and Shri Rakesh Singh of ICCSA, shared their valuable insights, highlighting the vital role seafarers play in the industry. Their thought-provoking discussion captivated an audience of over 1,000 seafarers, reinforcing the importance of unity and the maritime community’s shared commitment to supporting its workforce.
As part of the celebration, NUSI honored seafarers’ families through the “NUSI Scholar” program, acknowledging academic excellence with financial awards to top-performing students. This gesture underscored NUSI’s commitment to supporting seafarers’ families. The event concluded with Bro. Elvis Rodrigues, NUSI Organiser, delivering a heartfelt vote of thanks, encapsulating the unity and gratitude that defined Seafarers Unity Day 2024.
The successful celebration and NUSI’s ongoing commitment to welfare, advocacy, and training reaffirm the organization’s dedication to enhancing the lives and livelihoods of India’s seafarers, who play a vital role in global trade.
