The recent collaboration between the Directorate General of Shipping and The Yoga Institute in Mumbai culminated in a transformative event named “Sagar Mein Yog,” held at Belapur Jetty, Navi Mumbai on March 31st. This pioneering initiative aimed to integrate yoga and holistic well-being practices into the lives of seafarers, addressing the unique challenges they face at sea.

Gracing the event were Mr Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping; Capt BK Tyagi, CMD, The Shipping Corporation of India Limited (SCI); Mr Atul Ubale, Director – Bulk Carrier & Tankers & Additional Charge of Director – Finance, SCI; Dr Raut Pandurang Kondiram, IRS, Deputy Director General of Shipping; Mr Saanjeev V Mehra, Managing Director, Kenmark Tech Solutions and representatives from the yoga institute to name a few.

For many cadets in attendance, the event proved to be an enlightening experience, offering insights into various yoga asanas, kriyas, balanced diets, and lifestyle management techniques. Recognizing the mental and physical risks encountered by mariners, “Sagar Mein Yog” provided invaluable tools for enhancing their overall health and resilience.

In his welcome address, Mr Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping, emphasized the importance of fostering stability amidst life’s uncertainties. He stated, “(in Hindi) In our lives nowadays, there are many tensions, many incidents happen that are not within our control. Due to this, we need a medium by which we can mentally, physically, and overall bring stability in our lives, so that you go on to contribute effectively to society.”

The event’s timing coincided with the National Maritime Week 2024, observed from March 30th to April 5th, leading up to the National Maritime Day on April 5th. This annual celebration commemorates the historic maiden voyage of India’s first merchant vessel, the SS Loyalty, on April 5th, 1919, from Mumbai to London, marking a significant milestone in Indian shipping history.

“Sagar Mein Yog” symbolizes the maritime industry’s commitment to promoting the holistic well-being of seafarers. As seafaring continues to evolve, initiatives like these play a crucial role in nurturing the physical, mental, and emotional health of maritime professionals, ensuring their sustained contribution to the industry’s growth and prosperity.

The event’s success underscores the potential for integrating yoga and well-being practices into maritime training and operations, paving the way for a healthier and more resilient maritime workforce. As the maritime community commemorates National Maritime Week 2024, “Sagar Mein Yog” serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for a brighter and healthier future at sea.
