HIMT College recently marked a momentous occasion during India’s 78th Independence Day celebrations, hosting two significant events: the Passing out Parade of the 25th Batch of Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) and the 31st Batch of Electro-Technical Officers (ETO), alongside the induction of the 2nd batch of Synergy-sponsored Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) cadets.
The day began with a ceremonial flag hoisting led by the Chief Guest, Capt Swaminathan H., Co-CEO of Synergy Group, instilling a deep sense of national pride. This was followed by the singing of the national anthem, a moment that resonated with everyone present.
Adding to the day’s significance, the outgoing GME and ETO cadets presented a guard of honor to the esteemed guests, symbolizing the culmination of their rigorous training and their readiness to embark on maritime careers. Simultaneously, the induction of the 2nd batch of Synergy-sponsored DNS cadets underscored the ongoing commitment to fostering new talent within the maritime industry.
Following the formalities, the guests were taken on a tour of the HIMT campus, including a visit to the state-of-the-art Virtual Reality (VR) lab, which left a lasting impression on all.
The proceedings continued in the auditorium, where the program commenced with the traditional lighting of the Kuthuvilakku, symbolizing the beginning of an event of great importance. The guests were welcomed and honored with the presentation of a bouquet and the adornment of the Ponnadai by Mr. Tirth S. Vakil, Operations Manager, and Mr. Kirtan S. Vakil, Business Development Manager of HIMT.
Dr. Sanjeev S. Vakil, CEO of HIMT, delivered the welcome address, introducing the guests and setting the tone for the event. Capt. Anand Subramanian, Principal of HIMT College, then presented a detailed report on both the passing out batches and the induction of the new DNS batch, highlighting the significance of these milestones.
The prize distribution ceremony followed, recognizing cadets for their excellence in academics, overall performance, and class leadership. The event was further enriched by heartfelt speeches from the class leaders, who shared their memorable experiences at HIMT, adding a personal and emotional touch to the occasion.
In his address, Capt. Swaminathan H. commended HIMT as a “growing pillar of success” and urged everyone to read Jawaharlal Nehru’s iconic speech, “A Tryst with Destiny,” delivered on August 15, 1947. He emphasized the importance of hard work, sincerity, and honesty in achieving success, while also encouraging the cadets to value and maintain relationships within the maritime industry—a small but interconnected world. He reminded them that while the college may not teach everything, it provides a valuable simulation of real-world conditions on board ships.
Capt. H. Moses followed with an inspirational speech on safety, using a case study to underscore the critical importance of safety consciousness for cadets while working onboard. Capt. Himanshu Bhagwat concluded the speeches with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude for the Chief Guest’s inspiring words and acknowledging the support of everyone involved in the event.
The ceremony reached a vibrant crescendo with a cultural program by the cadets, highlighting their diverse talents and unwavering dedication. The event gracefully concluded with the national anthem, bringing to a close a day that honored not only the spirit of national pride but also the remarkable achievements and promising futures of HIMT’s cadets.
