Padmesh Prabhune –

A crewmember aboard the Gabon Republic-flagged MT Zeal was medevacuated last Sunday amidst severe weather conditions by a team of the Indian Coast Guard, approximately 20 kilometres off the Porbandar coast.

The MT Zeal issued an SOS on Sunday July 21 after one of its Indian crew experienced lower-body numbness and an extremely low pulse. Responding quickly, the ICG launched an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) that despite heavy rainfall, high-intensity winds, and adverse sea conditions, expertly navigated to the MT Zeal.

The helicopter maintained a precise position over the vessel, allowing for the effective deployment of a rescue basket to evacuate the sick crewmember.

After landing at the Coast Guard Air Enclave in Porbandar, he was taken to Porbandar for further medical treatment. ICG medical personnel provided the patient with interim relief and once the patient’s condition was stable, he was handed over to the local agent for further medical management.
