Despite heavy rains and severe weather conditions, the Indian Coast Guard successfully coordinated a search and rescue effort for the stranded IFB Aashni (IND-TN-12-MM-6623) ex-Thoothukudi on July 17, 24. During the late hours of July 16, an Indian Coast Guard Dornier aircraft conducting maritime surveillance discovered and sighted a troubled Indian fishing boat (IFB) with 11 crew members 50 nautical miles off Ponani (80 nautical miles from Kochi). The Indian Coast Guard District Headquarters No.4 (Kerala & Mahe) redirected ICGS Saksham, which was on patrol.
The IFB was in danger due to uncontrolled flooding caused by a hull break at the keel and a loss of propulsion, which posed a threat to the crew’s life. Given the gravity of the situation and the inclement weather, ICG quickly sent an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) from Kochi at 0205 hours to rescue the crew in peril. In addition, ICG ship Abhinav was dispatched at 0245 hours on 17 Jul 24 to support the SAR attempt for the distressed IFB. The ICG ship Saksham arrived at the location at its maximum speed and boarded a technical team on the stricken boat. Despite the adverse conditions, the ex-Saksham technical team carried out a vigorous de-flooding operation and supplied critical technical help, fresh water, and rations to the devastated IFB. The sea-air coordinated operation provided timely help to the beleaguered IFB. The operation ensured the safety of 11 crew members aboard IFB, which is being towed to Kochi.
