On June 21, the majestic Gateway of India in Colaba served as a stunning backdrop for the International Day of Yoga celebrations. Organized by the Mumbai Port Authority in collaboration with Patanjali Yogpeeth, the event emphasized yoga’s timeless relevance in promoting holistic well-being and global harmony. It also marked a key milestone with the formal launch of the ‘Sagar Mein Yog – Complete Wellness at Sea’ initiative, tailored specifically for the maritime community.

The event was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including Mr Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon’ble Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways; Mr Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping; Capt. (Dr.) Daniel Joseph, Deputy Director General of Shipping and key leaders from the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI). The gathering exemplified a shared commitment to integrating wellness practices into daily life and professional environments, particularly for the seafaring workforce.

International Yoga Day, celebrated globally since its inception in 2014 following India’s proposal to the United Nations, has grown into a unifying movement. This year’s theme, “One Earth, One Health,” resonated with the event’s focus on fostering harmony between individuals, communities, and the planet. Highlighting the spiritual, cultural, and societal significance of yoga, Shri Sonowal remarked, “Today, as the vast importance of Yoga is acknowledged globally, its proper advancement is being implemented. Through Yoga, we can bring simplicity, peace, and sustainability to mankind.”

The event also featured a live telecast of Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi leading the national celebrations from RK Beach in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. With over three lakh participants on-site and millions more joining nationwide, the synchronized “Yoga Sangam” was a testament to yoga’s universal appeal. In his address, Mr Modi emphasized, “Let us make Yoga a transformative movement that unites humanity, and leads to a peaceful, prosperous, and balanced world.”

The day’s activities included a demonstration of the Common Yoga Protocol and group practices of foundational asanas such as Vrikshasana, Trikonasana, and Mandukasana. A yoga instructor from Patanjali Yogpeeth guided participants and dignitaries through the sequences, showcasing the accessibility and benefits of yoga for all ages and fitness levels.

A highlight of the celebrations was the official launch of the ‘Sagar Mein Yog’ initiative by Shri Sonowal. The initiative, officially launched during the event, is a groundbreaking program designed to enhance the well-being of maritime professionals. Developed by the Directorate General of Shipping in partnership with NUSI, it integrates ancient Indian wellness practices, such as yoga and meditation, into the demanding lives of seafarers. Aligned with the Maritime India Vision 2030, the initiative aims to improve health, emotional resilience, and performance among maritime professionals globally.

The event concluded on an inspiring note, celebrating the profound impact of yoga in fostering physical and mental well-being. The gathering highlighted the commitment to promoting holistic health and sustainability, emphasizing the role of ancient Indian wellness practices in enhancing the lives of individuals across various sectors, including maritime professionals. This collective effort underscores the universal appeal of yoga as a unifying force for global harmony and well-being.
