On March 11, the Indian Maritime University (IMU) held its 3rd Alumni Industry Meet at the Mumbai Cricket Association, Mumbai. The event emerged as a pivotal forum that enhanced dialogue among industry veterans, IMU officials, and shipping professionals, focusing on the critical importance of strengthening maritime education and fostering industry collaboration. It was graced by notable attendees such as Dr Malini Shankar, Vice-Chancellor of IMU; Capt SM Halbe, CEO of MASSA; Mr Rajeev Nayyer, President of IMEI; Capt Philip Matthews, Director at SIMTF; Capt Amresh Jha, Vice President of Kanoo Shipping India and Capt. MP Bhasin, Master Chairman of CMMI. The event was seamlessly conducted by Ms Sini Manchala, Deputy Registrar at IMU Chennai.

The meet commenced with a welcome address by Capt Mihir Chandra, Campus Director at IMU Navi Mumbai, who warmly greeted the dignitaries and participants. Reflecting on the Indian cricket team’s recent victory, he highlighted the symbolic significance of hosting the event in such a prestigious venue. Capt Chandra emphasized the importance of camaraderie and collaboration, acknowledging the contributions of academia and the industry in shaping the maritime community.

Dr Shankar, in her address, extended gratitude to the industry for its unwavering support in mentoring cadets and enriching campus life. She highlighted IMU’s focus on research and academia-industry collaboration, which had progressed significantly under her tenure. Referencing national initiatives like Maritime Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, she called for continued cooperation, stating, “Together we all grow, together we contribute to the future generation which will be representing India in the maritime sector globally.”

The event also featured a series of insightful presentations. Commodore Kishore Dattaraya Joshi, Controller of Examinations, provided a comprehensive overview of IMU’s academic programs, including new initiatives like a four-year Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding program and an online MBA for seafarers. The university’s growing portfolio reflects its dedication to addressing industry demands and raising awareness about maritime careers.

Dr Rajoo Balaji, Pro Vice-Chancellor of IMU, presented the “IMU Strategic Plan 2025-2050,” emphasizing the institution’s vision to become a global maritime education leader. He outlined plans for curriculum modernization, integration of emerging technologies, and collaboration with the industry. Dr Balaji urged stakeholders to contribute, stating, “We want the industry to bring us their ideas, challenges, and problem statements, so we can help solve them through research, innovation, and incubation.” He also added, “Your ideas are vital. We want to align our objectives with national maritime visions like MIV 2030 and MAKV 2047, creating a roadmap for a brighter future.”

The meet also spotlighted IMU’s commitment to fostering innovation through its Startup Entrepreneurship Accelerator Foundation, which supports ideas from students, faculty, and industry professionals. A presentation on the “Samudra Surabhi Campaign” by Mr. Imtiaz, Deputy Registrar Admin, celebrated alumni contributions while appealing for continued support to enhance IMU’s facilities, research, and student development.

The event concluded with a robust discussion between IMU leadership and industry experts, followed by a networking session. This meet reaffirmed IMU’s commitment to being a beacon of maritime education and innovation, fostering collaboration to shape India’s maritime future.
