The Institute of Maritime Studies (IMS) Goa organized a thought-provoking technical seminar titled “Engine Room to Leadership: Building the Future of Marine Engineers” on March 21 at the Mirage Hotel, Mumbai. This seminar, aimed at fostering professional growth and exploring emerging trends in maritime engineering, brought together industry leaders, academicians, and aspiring marine engineers to exchange insights and ideas.

The event began with a warm welcome address by Mr Alwin A Dias, Deputy Director of IMS Goa, who emphasized the evolving role of marine engineers in the maritime industry. “It is no longer just about mastering the technicalities of the engine room, but also about preparing the next generation of leaders who can drive innovation, sustainability, and excellence in the maritime world,” said Mr. Dias. He highlighted the seminar’s objective of equipping participants with the skills to navigate the dynamic maritime landscape, urging attendees to engage actively and reflect on the leadership qualities needed for the industry’s future.

The seminar featured several compelling presentations. Capt (Dr.) Shashank Jahagirdar, MD – Country Head at MTM Ship Management, spoke on the “Change of Mindset and Skillset Required”, underscoring the need for marine engineers to evolve from technical specialists into strategic leaders. He emphasized fostering collaboration, mentorship, and dynamic decision-making, highlighting the importance of value-added training beyond certifications.

Capt. Sudhir Nayyar, Training Superintendent at Tomini Shipping, delivered an inspiring session on “Beyond the Engine Room: Leadership Strategies”. He outlined personal traits essential for leadership, such as authenticity, adaptability, and resilience, and encouraged participants to embrace continuous learning and creativity to drive growth.

In his presentation titled “Engineering – to Be a Good Leader”, Capt. Praveen Kumar Bansal, CEO and MD of K Line Ship Management (India) Pvt Ltd, focused on the rapid technological advancements shaping the industry. “Every few years, there’s a new type of engine, new fuel being introduced, and we need our marine engineers to be ready for the future,” Capt. Bansal stated. He stressed the importance of aligning strategic decisions with organizational goals and fostering trust, creativity, and teamwork. “How do we make a good marine engineer a leader? By teaching them to anticipate trends, stay competent, and align their decisions with company goals,” he added.

A unique perspective was provided by Mr Dipak Shah, Ex-Director of IMS Goa, who explored the spiritual dimensions of leadership in his session titled “Empowering Soul for Leadership”. He emphasized the role of self-reflection and meditation in building resilient and effective leaders.

The event concluded with an engaging panel discussion chaired by Capt. Nivin Varkey, Head of Quality and Vetting at Superfleet DMCC. The panel addressed key challenges and trends, focusing on developing both technical and interpersonal skills among marine engineers to prepare them for leadership roles in a rapidly evolving industry.

The seminar ended on a high note with memento presentations, a vote of thanks by Mr. Shivram Kamat, Director of IMS Goa, and an evening of networking over cocktails and dinner.
