The maritime industry is set to witness a historic event that will unite its stakeholders through the spirit of sportsmanship. The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) has announced the launch of the Maritime Games, a championship that aims to promote camaraderie, well-being, and industry relationships.
Mr Shyam Jagannathan, Director General of Shipping said, “The Maritime Games is an unparalleled opportunity to celebrate the maritime industry’s collective achievements. We envision this event as a seed for a much larger initiative in subsequent years, aiming to bring stakeholders from all zones under one sporting banner.”
The event will take place in Mumbai from March 25 to April 4, 2025, and will feature 12 diverse sports, including cricket, futsal, badminton, and chess. Over 3,000 participants from across the maritime ecosystem are expected to attend.

Engagement and Networking: Establishing robust connections among maritime stakeholders
Promotion of Health and Well-being: Encouraging physical activity within the industry
Showcasing Maritime Culture: Highlighting the heritage and contributions of the maritime sector
Fostering Team Spirit: Strengthening teamwork and collaboration across diverse entities
The Maritime Games aligns with the vision of the Khelo India — National Programme for Development of Sports, fostering holistic development, national pride, and economic opportunities through sports.
The event will culminate in a grand finale in Mumbai, coinciding with the National Maritime Day on April 5, 2025. The DGS seeks collaboration with all stakeholders, including the Shipping Ministry, state Olympic associations, and industry leaders, to ensure the event’s success.
Mr Jagannathan emphasized, “Your support will be pivotal in making this event a resounding success. Together, we can create a platform that celebrates our maritime heritage and paves the way for a more collaborative and prosperous future.”
Capt Girish Phadnis, Computation Director, praised the initiative, saying, “The Director General of Shipping’s innovative idea to unite the maritime industry through sports is a game-changer. I firmly believe the Maritime Games will evolve into a prestigious national event, featuring four zonal championships that bring together all stakeholders connected to shipping.”
