On January 30, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, through the Directorate General of Shipping, launched two transformative flagship programs—Sagar Mein Yog and Sagar Mein Samman—at the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) in Mumbai. These initiatives are rooted in the vision of the Prime Minister’s Maritime India Vision 2030 and aim to prioritize seafarer well-being while championing the inclusion and recognition of women in maritime careers.
Sagar Mein Yog is a comprehensive wellness program aimed at promoting physical, mental, and spiritual health among seafarers across all stages of their professional journey—Pre-Sea, At-Sea, and Post-Sea. By incorporating yoga into maritime training and practices, the initiative aims to enhance resilience, reduce medical emergencies, and foster overall well-being. Its goal is to create a healthier and more balanced maritime workforce.
On the other hand, Sagar Mein Samman is a pioneering step toward empowering women in the maritime sector. Focused on enhancing respect, safety, and career opportunities, it strives to build a supportive environment where women seafarers can thrive. The programme also reflects the broader global push for inclusivity and gender equality in industries traditionally dominated by men.
The event saw participation from key industry leaders, including Mr Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping; Capt BK Tyagi, CMD of SCI; Capt (Dr) Daniel Joseph, Deputy Director General of Shipping (Crew), DG Shipping; Capt AK Azad, Nautical Advisor at DG Shipping; Capt Vivek Bhandarkar, Secretary General at CMMI; Capt Girish Phadnis, CEO of KAE Maritime Services; Capt Philip Mathews, Director at SIMTF; Ms HK Joshi, Chairperson, Sagar Mein Samman, & Former CMD of SCI; Capt Tushar Pradhan, General Secretary of MUI; Mr Milind Kandalgaonkar, General Secretary of NUSI; Ms Saleha Shaikh, Founder and Head of the MUI Women’s Wing; and Ms Sanjam Sahi Gupta, Founder of Maritime SheEO; among others. During his address, Mr Jagannathan elaborated on the broader implications of the initiatives, emphasizing their potential to elevate Indian shipping on a global scale. The event also featured short films that delved into the objectives and implementation of the programs.
In his keynote address, Mr Shantanu Thakur, Honourable Union Minister of State, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways highlighted the importance of acknowledging the unique contributions of women in this sector, pointing out that the initiative is crucial for ensuring that female seafarers, who often face distinct challenges while working far from home, are celebrated and supported. As vital contributors to India’s maritime strength, women seafarers embody resilience and excellence on the global stage.
Further, he emphasized the profound connection between yoga and Indian heritage, noting the program’s significance for our nearly 3 lakhs plus active seafarers, who face unique challenges while serving far from home. As global ambassadors of India, our seafarers would exemplify the nation’s resilient spirit and maritime excellence.
