Making a landmark appearance at The Maritime SheEO Conference, Ms Monica Nagelgaard, Consul General of Norway to India in her address emphasized the Consulate General’s long-standing commitment to promoting gender equality. She said, “As a key partner, the Consulate General recognizes the vital importance of addressing this issue, aligning with Norway’s broader vision for an equal society.”
Bridging the gender gap
Norway, the world’s fifth-largest maritime nation, acknowledges the industry’s significant gender gap. Despite Norway’s high female workforce participation rate of 70%, women make up only 21% of the maritime workforce, with a mere 2% globally. The Norwegian government has launched a strategy to bridge this gap, focusing on recruitment, role models, inclusive work environments, and adaptable workplaces.
Bilateral partnership between Norway and India
The bilateral partnership between Norway and India is crucial in advancing gender equality. India, the third-largest provider of seafarers, has a mere 0.5% female workforce representation. Collaborative efforts with the Indian government, DG Shipping, industry stakeholders, and universities will drive change.
In conclusion, she said, “the maritime sector must navigate significant challenges, including digitalization, clean transition, and labor demand. To succeed, it’s crucial we attract diverse talent. Gender equality is both a fundamental human right and a vital catalyst for economic growth, social stability, and democratic progress.”
