The International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) hosted its much-anticipated ISWAN Seminar on November 28 at the Maritime Training Institute (MTI) in Mumbai. Bringing together maritime professionals, policymakers, and welfare advocates, the seminar addressed the pressing challenges faced by seafarers while spotlighting initiatives to enhance their welfare and resilience.
Mr Deepak Shetty, Former Director General of Shipping, delivered a thought-provoking opening address, acknowledging seafarers’ vital yet often-overlooked efforts in ensuring uninterrupted global trade during the pandemic. He stated, “Amidst the chaos of the pandemic, seafarers continued to man vessels and move goods, ensuring global supply chains remained functional, yet they still await recognition as essential workers.”
The Director General of Shipping, Mr Shyam Jagannathan, celebrated India’s maritime achievements and outlined initiatives to address modern challenges. Emphasising on Sagar Mein Yog, a program fostering holistic development that aims to enhance mental health, communication skills, and financial literacy among seafarers, he remarked, “Through the Sagar Mein Yog initiative, we aim to link cultural heritage with holistic development, addressing mental health, communication skills, and financial literacy—ensuring our seafarers thrive both at sea and off the sea.”
The seminar showcased insightful presentations by esteemed guests, including Capt JC Anand, Chairman Emeritus of the Indian Register of Shipping, who highlighted Indian seafarers’ pivotal role and stressed the need for advanced training. Additionally, Mr René Andersen, CEO of Sea Health and Welfare, showcased his organization’s global initiatives, featuring innovative digital tools and connectivity programme.
ISWAN launched its Family Outreach Program (FOP) and unveiled a ground-breaking research report, developed in conjunction with Gujarat Maritime University, addressing fraudulent recruitment practices in India. Additionally, ISWAN announced a partnership with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences to offer complimentary counselling services in regional languages, demonstrating its dedication to seafarers’ mental well-being.”
The seminar’s panel discussions delved into critical issues, including family support, fraudulent recruitment, and decarbonization’s impact. Notably, Sailing Master Capt Sharad Kishore shared insightful experiences on enhancing crew-family communication. Experts converged on the need for robust regulatory frameworks, stringent enforcement, and specialized training for a decarbonized maritime future.
Commander Abheer Sharma, Commander of Operations at the Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), emphasized the vital role of maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region, underscoring its significance in ensuring stability and peace in the region. Meanwhile, Capt. (Dr) Daniel J Joseph, Deputy Director General of Shipping (Crew) spotlighted the Directorate General of Shipping proactive initiatives aimed at combating fraudulent practices and enhancing the welfare of Indian seafarers worldwide.
The seminar culminated with heartfelt appreciation expressed by Mr Simon Grainge, CEO of ISWAN, and a vote of thanks by Mr Chirag Bahri, International Operations Manager. ISWAN’s unwavering vision – prioritizing seafarer welfare and support – resonated throughout the event.
