At the Maritime SheEO conference, Dr Malini Shankar, Vice Chancellor of Indian Maritime University, shared her firsthand insights on women’s transformative impact in maritime.
The State of Women’s Empowerment
We live in a world where technology has reached every aspect of our lives, yet misogyny persists. The 2016 US presidential elections saw a female nominee face vulgar insinuations and sexist remarks, highlighting the stark reality of gender bias. This phenomenon is not limited to politics; women in various professions face similar challenges.
Feminist Transformation
However, there’s a silver lining. Women are breaking barriers, entering male-dominated careers, and excelling in fields like aviation and engineering. India boasts the largest proportion of female airline pilots worldwide. Within the Indian Maritime University, we’ve seen a 16-fold increase in female cadets over the past decade.
The Power of Education
Interacting with these young women has been enlightening. They’re articulate, confident, and ambitious, with a thirst for knowledge and eagerness to learn. They’re also more likely to have read books and played sports than their male counterparts. This shift is a testament to the changing dynamics of Indian society, where parents now encourage daughters to pursue their aspirations.
Challenges Ahead
Despite progress, challenges persist. High attrition rates among women in technology companies, hesitation to deploy women on ships due to interpersonal conflicts, and debates around appropriate attire and behavior onboard vessels are concerns that need addressing.
Solutions for a Better Future
Cross-Cultural Management Courses: Essential for professionals working in the shipping industry, where diverse backgrounds and cultures intersect
Gender Sensitization for Men: A refresher course to educate men on the importance of equality and mutual respect
Support and Encouragement: Maritime CEO conferences and events can foster a culture of empowerment, providing tools and techniques for effective communication
In conclusion, she said “As we navigate the complexities of gender equality, it’s essential to recognize the progress made and the challenges ahead. By supporting each other and fostering a culture of empowerment, we can create a more inclusive maritime industry.”
