IMO Council has accepted India’s Proposal to include “well-being of seafarers” as one of the criterions while considering for the International Maritime Prize at its 133rd session that was held during 18 to 22 November 2024 at London.
Indian delegation headed by Shri T.K Ramachandaran, IAS, Secretary, MoPSW, GoI, and Shri Shyam Jagannathan, D.G Shipping, GOI, along with respective officials made their presence felt at the session.
Indian delegates advocated for the formal cooperation between IMO-IALA; working together in a common effort to harmonise Marine Aids to Navigation worldwide and to ensure that the movements of vessels are safe, expeditious and cost-effective while protecting the environment.
IMO Secretary-General Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, while expressing concerns over the continued attacks on ships and seafarers said, “These incidents not only threaten the safety and welfare of seafarers, but also carry significant implications for the stability of international shipping.”
Incidentally the IMO council, at the 133rd session, also announced its IMO Gender Equality Award to maritime entrepreneur Karin Orsel.
Appreciating IMO’s efforts in recognizing and felicitating maritime professionals, India proposed to include “Well-being of seafarers” as one of the criteria for an International Maritime Prize that was accepted by the IMO Council. The International Maritime Prize is awarded annually by the IMO Council to the individual or organization judged to have made the most significant contribution to the work and objectives of IMO.
Indian delegates further advocated for transparent and accountable voting process at IMO, and improvement in ‘Integrated Global Shipping Information System.’
