CMC Maritime Academy Mumbai formally launched its campus on October 10th, at Vashi, Navi Mumbai, in a ceremony attended by prominent maritime industry leaders. The maritime industry heavyweights who attended the event were Mr Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping, Government of India, Capt MP Bhasin, Chairman, CMMI; Capt Anshul Rajvanshi, MD of Synergy Group; Capt RK Muduli, former Deputy Nautical Advisor to the Government of India; Capt Pramod Kumar; and Mr Jitendra Shankarrao Jadhav, Assistant Director General of Shipping, DGS. This impressive gathering underscored the academy’s significant role in elevating maritime education and training in India, marking a major milestone in the country’s maritime history.
The CMC Maritime Academy Mumbai inauguration ceremony kicked off with a colorful ribbon-cutting ceremony under a majestic Indian tri-color balloon arch, radiating national pride. CMC Group Chairman Mr SI Nathan, and Regional Director Mr S Shyamsundar then guided the esteemed guests on a tour of the cutting-edge facility. The event’s significance was further underscored by the ceremonial lighting of the traditional “kuthuvilakku,” a symbolic gesture representing the pursuit of knowledge and the dispelling of ignorance. As the guests convened, an atmosphere of collaboration and shared purpose prevailed, highlighting the collective commitment to revolutionizing maritime education in India.
Mr Nathan welcomed dignitaries and underscored the significance of the new academy, saying, “Today marks a commitment to our community’s future, not just an opening.” He emphasized training’s crucial role in securing India’s global maritime presence, envisioning the space as a hub for maritime training, growth, and opportunity for aspiring seafarers. Mr Nathan encouraged collaboration among maritime institutions to ensure Indian seafarers can compete globally, echoing the vision of institutions like CMC Maritime Academy, which aims for 100% successful trainees in qualifying examinations. By fostering collaboration and excellence, India’s maritime industry can thrive on the world stage.
Chief Guest Mr Jagannathan delivered a compelling keynote address, highlighting the vast opportunities for Indian seafarers in the global maritime industry. Noting that Indians currently comprise 10-15% of the world’s seafaring workforce, he revealed the government’s ambitious target to increase this share to over 20% within five years. Emphasizing the crucial role of maritime institutions, Mr Jagannathan urged providers to deliver top-notch education and training. He commended Mr Nathan’s dedication to maritime education, saying, “May this facility nurture innovation, foster connections, and empower every community member to excel.” His inspiring words resonated deeply with the audience, garnering enthusiastic applause and fueling high hopes for the academy’s future.
The event also featured insightful remarks from distinguished guests. Capt Bhasin praised CMC’s illustrious reputation, saying, “The name CMC speaks for itself, reflecting its profound influence and esteemed standing within the maritime community, fostered through its enduring partnership with MSC.” Capt Rajvanshi emphasized the urgent need to modernize maritime education, aligning it with global benchmarks to empower Indian seafarers. He commended CMC’s contributions and expressed optimism that the academy will propel Indian maritime professionals to greater heights globally.
