Pratik Bijlani – Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has achieved a new milestone by handling 41.79 million metric tons (MMTs) of cargo in the first half of FY 2024-25, marking a 6% growth compared to 39.60 MMTs in the same period last year. This growth is attributed to increased handling of key commodities, including crude oil, LPG, and coal, reinforcing VPA’s status as one of India’s premier ports. The surge follows an impressive 80 MMT throughput in the previous fiscal year, demonstrating the port’s consistent performance and growing capacity.
In alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 100-day action plan, the VPA has also embraced significant digital transformation. A major achievement in this area is the implementation of the National Logistics Portal (Marine), which has streamlined communication between various stakeholders such as shipping lines, customs authorities, and the Port Health Officer (PHO). This initiative facilitates real-time data exchange, enhances transparency, and improves operational efficiency at the port.
The port’s commitment to sustainability is also evident in its ongoing green initiatives. VPA has incorporated 100% renewable energy, leading to a significant reduction in carbon emissions within the maritime sector. The port has also introduced CNG-powered buses, sweeping machines, and fire tenders to enhance air quality and safety within its premises. These efforts reflect the VPA’s dedication to both environmental responsibility and operational excellence.
With its focus on innovation, sustainability, and efficiency, the Visakhapatnam Port Authority is setting new benchmarks in the Indian maritime industry, positioning itself as a key player in India’s long-term vision for a more self-reliant and competitive shipping sector.
