On September 18, 2024, the Bamboo Plantation Inauguration Ceremony at St. Jude India Childcare Centre, Sewri, Mumbai, marked a significant step toward sustainability, jointly organized by D.G. Shipping, Mumbai Port Authority, ANA (Amazeng Nautical Association), and WICCI (Women’s India Chamber of Commerce and Industry). This event aimed to transform Mumbai Port Authority land into a green haven, addressing the urgent need to combat the growing carbon footprint. Bamboo, a rapidly renewable and efficient carbon sequestration resource, stood at the heart of this initiative, showcasing its potential as a tool for environmental conservation and decarbonization.
The event attracted numerous dignitaries from the maritime industry, including Mr. Rajiv Jalota, Chairperson of MbPA; Capt. M.P. Bhasin, Chairman of CMMI; Mr. Manoj Yadav, General Secretary of FSUI; Capt. Rajesh Tandon, CEO of FOSMA; Capt. Nazir Upadhye, Managing Director of Sibamar Marine Logistics Pvt Ltd and Mr. S.M. Rai, Ex-Chairperson of IMEI Mumbai. Cadets from IMU and MTI were also present, representing the next generation of maritime professionals. The ceremony, hosted by Mr. Sanjeev Mehra, Managing Director of Kenmark Tech Solutions, served as a reminder of the industry’s collective responsibility toward environmental preservation.
Mr. Mehra set the tone for the event with an inspiring welcome speech, stating, “We are gathered here today near the Tata Memorial Centre at the Mumbai Port Trust for a day that is more than just a ceremonial occasion. It is a day where we collectively take a step forward in contributing to sustainability, environmental preservation, and creating a greener future for generations to come.” His words echoed the theme of the event, emphasizing the importance of long-term environmental stewardship.
The chief guest, Mr. Rajiv Jalota, further highlighted the significance of the initiative in his inauguration speech, expressing heartfelt gratitude to all participants. “I am really really thankful to all of you who have tried to participate in a cause that has greater sustainable ecological impacts,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of such efforts for the future of the planet.
The event featured thought-provoking skits by cadets from T.S. Chanakya and MTI, focusing on the environmental impact of pollution and deforestation. These performances were well-received, prompting reflection on the urgent need for action.
Following the skits, donors were awarded certificates of recognition for their contributions, with top contributors including Gulf Turbo Solutions, Informa Markets, Zener Maritime Solutions, and First Policy Insurance. The prestigious Green Crusader Award 2024 and Best Slogan Award were also presented, along with accolades for the event’s organizers.
The ceremony culminated with the planting of bamboo saplings by donors, who symbolically named the plants and pledged to nurture them. This event marked a meaningful step forward in fostering sustainability and environmental responsibility within the maritime community.
