Pratik Bijlani – On August 30, Anglo-Eastern Maritime Academy (AEMA) staged a graduation ceremony for GME Batch 41 and ETO Batch 15 at Karjat, Mumbai. The celebration marked a significant milestone for the graduates, as they completed their pre-sea training course and prepared to begin their maritime careers.
The Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) course at AEMA is a 17-week pre-sea training program designed to provide cadets with the knowledge and skills needed to work as Electro-Technical Officers on commercial ships. This is followed by 8 months of onboard instruction, during which cadets earn a salary and free boarding and accommodation. The Graduate Marine Engineer (GME) course is a one-year pre-sea training program that includes eight months of classroom instruction and four months of onboard training. Both courses have been authorised by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), confirming that they meet international maritime requirements.
Several eminent guests attended the ceremony, including the Chief Guest, Mr. Praveen K Mishra, Managing Director of IRClass, and the Guest of Honour, Capt. Mihir Chandra, Director of the Indian Maritime University (IMU), Navi Mumbai Campus. Other noteworthy attendees included Capt. K.N. Deboo, Director and Principal of AEMTC, Mr. Tejinder P.S. Bhamra, Principal of AEMA, Mr. Francis Akkara, Assistant Director and Vice President of AEMTC, and Capt. Sudhir Rai, Vice Principal of AEMA.
Mr. Bhamra opened the occasion with a welcome speech, expressing delight in the graduates’ accomplishments and recognising the faculty members’ and staff’s efforts. He emphasised the need for keeping a learning attitude in the ever-changing marine business, which introduces new technologies, laws, and rules on a regular basis.
Following the inaugural address, the graduates of GME Batch 41 and ETO Batch 15 put on a dynamic cultural program featuring band performances, poetry readings, and dance collaborations, lending a festive touch to the event.
Mr. Anil Sharma, Head of the ETO Department, delivered a detailed course report, complimenting ETO Batch 15 as the best batch yet and emphasising their accomplishments, which included a project connected to the MV Dali blackout case. Mr. Yogesh Chonkar, Head of the GME Department, then delivered a report on GME Batch 41, outlining their rigorous training and extracurricular initiatives, such as the AEMA Finance and Investment Club, and proudly mentioning M.V.Federal Clyde, the first ship fully manned by AEMA graduates.
Mr. Francis Akkara addressed the audience, giving significant ideas on self-worth and the necessity of mental clarity, humility, and adherence to safety regulations for professional advancement in the maritime business. He congratulated the graduates and urged them to retain high ethics and professionalism as they enter the field.
Capt. Mihir Chandra, the Guest of Honour, motivated the graduates with these words: “Be very careful aboard the ships, since you are the live wire of the ships. You will propel the ship to prosperity, which will benefit the entire nation.” He emphasised the need of practical knowledge and maintaining a positive mindset as keys to success.
The Chief Guest, Mr. Praveen K Mishra, concluded the occasion with a poignant statement, congratulating the graduates and delivering wise advice: “Today you take on the mantle of a mariner, ready to sail the great ocean and contribute to the global maritime sector. This day is a testimonial to your hard work, perseverance, and steadfast commitment.” He emphasised the unlimited opportunities and challenges that await in the ever-changing maritime business.
The celebration concluded with an award ceremony to recognise the top-performing cadets, followed by a vote of appreciation from one of the graduates, bringing the unforgettable day to an end.
