On August 2, 2024, the Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI) and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) announced the start of their Executive MBA program in Maritime Management, Logistics, and Supply Chain. The event, held at the Hotel Kohinoor in Mumbai, marked the start of the course, which is set to begin in August 2024. This program seeks to develop seafarers’ careers by providing advanced management education and specialised knowledge in maritime logistics and supply chain management.

IIM Mumbai, previously the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), is a reputable business school founded in 1963. IIM Mumbai, which is ranked first in logistics and supply chain management, collaborated with CMMI to create a unique course that combines top-tier management education with extensive marine experience. The Executive MBA program, which may be completed in two years with the possibility of extending to three, provides a comprehensive curriculum that includes 19 management courses, 11 marine courses, an internship, a worldwide online course, and a capstone project. The program, priced at INR 15 lakhs, is an excellent investment for aspiring marine professionals, with sessions held largely on weekends to suit working people.

Vivek Bhandarkar, Secretary General, CMMI, among others, attended the event Mr Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping, was the Chief Guest, and Capt. K.N. Deboo served as Master of Ceremonies.

Capt. Deboo emphasised the program’s significance, adding that it was a watershed moment for CMMI and IIM. He recognised Capt. B.K. Jha, a former Master of CMMI, for his crucial role in launching the MBA program, which required years of effort to complete. He emphasised the program’s significance for seafarers migrating to shore-based positions and graduates entering the shipping and logistics sector.

Capt. M.P. Bhasin took great delight in presenting the unique MBA program, crediting its success to the united efforts of CMMI and IIM. He stated, “Till today, there is no executive MBA in India that combines Logistics Supply Chain with Maritime Management,” emphasising the program’s distinction.

Prof. Vivekanand Khanapuri, Dean SRIC, IIM Mumbai, emphasised the importance of the course and its potential to improve India’s worldwide status, notably in shipping and logistics. He emphasised the course’s comprehensive design and mission to develop industry specialists into global business leaders.

Capt. S.M. Halbe praised the program’s collaborative efforts, and Capt. Pankaj Kapoor described the course framework, emphasising its originality and global relevance. He also highlighted the possibility for both mariners and non-mariners to upgrade their skills and join the distinguished IIM alumni network.

Capt. B.K. Tyagi emphasised the course’s timely nature, pointing out the importance of the maritime sector in India’s future prosperity. He guaranteed the IIM team of mariners’ capabilities and dedication, as well as the backing of SCI and the Maritime Fraternity.

Mr Arun Sharma, Executive Chairman of IRClass, discussed the evolution of marine training in India and the excellent standard of seafarers created. He emphasised the importance of the next 20 years in modernising the global maritime industry and expressed his support for the initiative.

Finally, Chief Guest Mr Jagannathan lauded CMMI and IIM’s collaborative efforts, citing IIM’s outstanding global reputation and contribution to the global talent pool. He said: “IIM Mumbai belongs to a very eminent path-setting academic tradition, that of the Indian Institutes of Management, which have given some of the most seminal and fertile minds in management and thought leadership, not just to India, but to the entire globe.”

The inauguration of this Executive MBA represents a significant step forward in maritime education, providing a unique opportunity for maritime professionals to advance their careers and contribute to the industry’s long-term success.
