The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has named the recipients of the 2024 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea. This distinguished award is presented to two groups of nominees: the captain and crew of the oil tanker Marlin Luanda, and the captain and crew of the tugboat Pemex Maya. These personnel displayed great heroism in the face of extreme peril, safeguarding the safety of others while also limiting environmental dangers.
Captain Abhilash Rawat and the crew of the Marlin Luanda, nominated by the Marshall Islands, demonstrated extraordinary bravery and determination after their ship was hit by an anti-ship ballistic missile on January 26, 2024. The explosion ignited a cargo tank, posing a serious fire risk with flames reaching five metres. Despite the great danger and the possibility of additional attacks, Captain Rawat quickly organised firefighting efforts. The crew fought the fire for four and a half hours with fixed foam monitors and portable hoses. Other vessels and navy ships, including the French frigate FS Alsace and the Indian cruiser INS Visakhapatnam, played an important role in finally extinguishing the fire. The crew’s tireless efforts and professional consultations eventually resulted to the Marlin Luanda sailing safely under naval escort, demonstrating exceptional seamanship and daring.
Captain Jorge Fernando Galaviz Fuentes and the crew of the tugboat Pemex Maya, nominated by Mexico, were honoured for their courageous actions during Hurricane Otis on October 25, 2023. As a category 5 hurricane hit Mexico’s Pacific coast, the Pemex Maya team braved hazardous weather conditions to rescue six stranded people from four different vessels. The crew performed intricate and perilous manoeuvres in the dark and rough waters, demonstrating outstanding seamanship and resolve. Their alertness and bravery ensured that the survivors were successfully rescued and sent to shore for medical treatment.
The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea recognises those who risk their lives to save others or avoid environmental damage. This year’s winners were chosen from 41 nominations submitted by 15 member states and three non-governmental organisations. The awards recognise the incredible courage and professionalism of seafarers who execute acts of bravery under the most difficult circumstances.
The acknowledgment of Captain Rawat and the Marlin Luanda team, as well as Captain Galaviz and the Pemex Maya crew, emphasises the value of courage, commitment, and skill in marine operations. Their actions are an amazing example of the maritime community’s perseverance and heroism.
