The International Maritime Institute (IMI) held the graduation ceremony for the 39th batch of DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) and 16th batch of BTech (Marine Engineering) on June 15, in the prestigious convention hall at the Expo Centre in Greater Noida.
This event was an important milestone for the cadets, who had undergone extensive academic and practical training. Their voyage, distinguished by hard effort, determination, and dedication, has methodically prepared them to master navigation, understand maritime rules, and safety standards, preparing them for the perils of the sea.
Several dignitaries attended the ceremony, including the Chief Guest, Mr Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping, and the Guest of Honour, Captain MP Bhasin, Managing Director of MSC Crewing Services. Among the other important persons were Mr Tushar Sharma from Fleet Management, Ms Poonam Nagpal from MSC Ship Management Company, and the Chairman, Captain Kohli, as well as Captain Saurabh Varshney, Head of Institute (HOI), proud parents, and mentors.
Mr Jagannathan and Capt Bhasin were greeted warmly at IMI and given the opportunity to explore both IMI campuses. During their visit, they talked with the directors and personnel, learning about the institute’s operations and instructional approach. They took a trip around campus and saw first-hand the vibrant academic atmosphere.
The guests took part in a tree planting ceremony as a symbol of their commitment to the environment and future generations before heading to the graduation ceremony location.
The cadets cordially welcomed the chief guest and guest of honour as they arrived at the convention hall. In accordance with tradition, the graduation began with an auspicious lamp lighting ritual. This symbolic act set the tone for an evening of pride, joy, and contemplation on the cadets’ journeys.
Captain Varshney, the HOI of the International Maritime Institute (IMI), congratulated the cadets and offered words of wisdom and encouragement. His advice was followed by comments from Captain Bhasin, who emphasised the value of perseverance and dedication in the maritime industry.
Captain Bhasin discussed the enormous realm of nautical adventure and the ‘Sagar Mein Yog’ project, which represents the maritime industry’s dedication to enhancing seafarers’ well-being. As seafaring evolves, efforts like these play an important role in maintaining the physical, mental, and emotional health of maritime workers, assuring their continued commitment to the industry’s growth and success. His advice: “Carry the knowledge of what you have learnt, and also be prepared to continue to learn on the job.”
Mr Jagannathan gave an inspiring lecture emphasising the importance of marine professionals in the global economy. He advised the cadets to maintain the highest levels of professionalism and ethics in their future undertakings. He announced DGS initiatives such as ‘Sagar Mein Yog’ to promote the well-being and skill development of seafarers, as well as ‘Sagar Mein Samman’ to honour female seafarers. He congratulated each cadet, saying, “Make us all proud, the nation as well as your parents.”
Captain Kohli expressed gratitude for the distinguished visitors’ presence and significant support by presenting them with shawls and mementos.
The award ceremony, in which outstanding cadets were recognised for their exemplary performance, was the evening’s highlight. Chief Engineer Arvind Aggrawal (Head of Department – Engineering) addressed the stage to highlight the B Tech cadets’ successes, while Captain Pramod Kumar (Head of Department -Nautical) discussed the DNS batch’s achievements. The applause rippled across the hall, congratulating the awardees on their outstanding efforts.
Following the prize distribution, the cadets staged a cultural programme that included a play encouraging female mariners, as well as yoga, music, dance, and martial arts performances that captivated the crowd.
Bhamini Sharma, Mr Tushar Sharma’s daughter, charmed everyone in the audience with her melodic performance. Her soulful interpretation set the tone for an amazing evening, and her enchanting voice and talent added a unique charm that made an indelible effect on the audience.
As the celebration came to an end, Captain Kalra mounted the stage to give his vote of appreciation. He thanked everyone who helped to make the Passing Out Ceremony a success, including dignitaries, participants, faculty members, and staff.
The graduation ceremony was a great occasion that acknowledged the cadets’ hard work and dedication. It commemorated their successes and potential futures, instilling a sense of pride and accomplishment and reminding everyone of the noble nautical profession.
