Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) has received one of the crucial environmental and coastal regulation zone (ECRZ) approval from the central government to expand the Mundra port, one of India’s largest commercial and top container port by volume, located in Kutch, Gujarat. The clearance comes after the Ministry of Environment’s Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) reviewed APSEZ’s submission.
With centre’s nod Mundra Port is all set to more than double the capacity of its flagship port from 225 million tonnes to 514 million tonnes, spanning over an area of 3,335 hectares, with an investment of Rs 45,000 crores. The port is a key component of APSEZ’s goal of reaching 500 million tons of cargo volume by 2025.
This extension will accommodate multi-purpose, liquid, gas, and cryogenic cargo, allowing Mundra to handle a projected 200 million tonnes cargo in FY25, a first for an Indian port.
In FY24, it carried 179.6 million tons of cargo, including 7.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).This accounts for 44% of container traffic and more than 27% of the overall cargo in India.
According to APSEZ, this expansion is part of the Adani Group’s more extensive strategy, which includes developing Mundra as the world’s largest renewable energy manufacturing hub.
