June 01st marks a momentous occasion for the maritime industry as The Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI) and the Indian Institute of Management Mumbai (IIM Mumbai) have come together to launch the Executive MBA in Maritime Management, Logistics, and Supply Chain. The announcement of this prestigious new course was made at a seminar held at IMEI House, Navi Mumbai, marking the culmination of nearly a year of collaborative effort and support from the Institute of Marine Engineers India (IMEI).
This innovative program aims to enhance the careers of seafarers by providing them with advanced management education and specialized knowledge in maritime logistics and supply chain management. IIM Mumbai, formerly known as the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) established in 1963, is one of India’s most reputed business schools and is ranked first in logistics and supply chain management. The collaboration with CMMI has resulted in a unique course that blends IIM’s top-ranked management education with CMMI’s deep maritime expertise.
The Executive MBA program, designed to be completed in two years with an option to extend to three, offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes 19 management and 11 maritime courses, along with an internship, a global online course, and a capstone project. Priced at INR 15 lakhs, the program is considered a valuable investment for aspiring maritime professionals. The majority of the sessions are scheduled on weekends, with occasional evening sessions on weekdays, making it accessible for working professionals.
Capt Viraf Chichgar, General Manager-Training, Fleet Management Training Institute, flawlessly conducted the seminar. Capt Nalin Pandey, Deputy Chairman, CMMI Navi Mumbai delivered the welcoming address, expressing heartfelt gratitude to the members of CMMI and IMEI for their perseverance in making this program a reality.
In his address, Capt MP Bhasin, Chairman, CMMI, highlighted the significance of this collaboration. “You say the word IIM, it’s a very premium institute, just to reach up to them and make them agree to start this course, itself was a very big success for us,” he said, emphasizing the prestige and value IIM Mumbai brings to this course. He acknowledged the support of Mr Rajiv Nayyer, President, IMEI, and expressed optimism about the program’s success, noting that many companies have already pledged to hire graduates from this course.
Mr Arun Kumar Gupta, Chairman, IMEI Navi Mumbai Chapter, extended a warm welcome to the attendees and commended Capt Bhasin for his efforts. He urged seafarers to seize this unique opportunity to advance their careers, reminiscing about his own desire for a MBA specific to the marine industry, which was previously unavailable.
Capt Pankaj Kapoor, Founder of Quaadrant Legal, detailed the course structure and the array of modules available to candidates. He underscored the course’s uniqueness and global relevance, stating, “This is the only course of its kind available worldwide. Let us not let this opportunity slip away from us. Let us seize it with both hands.”
The seminar concluded with a Q&A session, where members engaged with the speakers to gain further insights into the program. The event was attended by notable figures from the Indian maritime fraternity, including Mr. Rajiv Nayyer, President of IMEI, Capt. Nand K Sah, CEO of Sea Resolute LLP, and Capt. B.P.
